I do not claim any special or deep knowledge on theology or scripture, I am just a layman trying to find my way through life. But I fear too much scholarship can be damaging, too much can cause us to lose sight of what is important. While knowledge is wonderful and should be sought our entire lives, WHY we seek it can be harmful.
If we seek it to learn, to grow in our walk, in our faith then we can never have enough and should never stop seeking it. However if we seek it in order to disprove something, or to prove our view then it can be dangerous. Higher Criticism (or scholarship seeking to disprove scripture's inerrancy or Jesus' acts) is an example to me of such dangerous scholarship. The Jesus Seminar is another such example.
When humans try to explain God or God's acts then we are already starting to goo off track and can only go astray. We cannot understand or "get to the root of" anything of God using our own mere abilities as high and refined as they may or may not be.
And when in our attempts to "get to the root of God" we disprove or discredit our only sources of knowledge about God (namely the Scriptures left to us by the Apostles and OT writers) claiming our own abilities and sensibilities then we are building upon sand and not rock.
